Every business can benefit from a helping hand and someone that is not necessarily involved in the day to day running of the business. With the modern day business owner juggling multiple priorities and liaising with different stakeholders, it can become problematic to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
The role a business agent is to be detached from the inner workings of a business and focus more on specific tasks to assist the business owner in achieving their objects. According to the Cambridge dictionary, a business agent is, “a person who represents a person or company in matters of business and who can make business decisions, agreements, etc., for them.” Generally, the role of a business agent is to handle business affairs for an individual or company. Many different types of organisations and individuals use a business agent such as sportspeople, actors and real estate developers.
Although a business agent does not get involved with daily activities, they are usually assigned a fixed task which is clearly agreed before the commencement of any business relationship. Some of the most popular tasks associated with a business agent include negotiating contracts on behalf of a client or assisting with the provision of external finance.
The reason a business agent is trusted with such mission critical tasks is because they possess the skills, experience and contacts to add tangible value to any organisation or individuals they work with. For example, if a business is looking to secure finance for expansion, a business agent will usually have access to brokers, private investors and finance schemes that are not available on the high street. This allows companies to secure finance at a cost effective rate that does not put pressure on their cashflow. Now, the role of a business agent is strictly limited to finance, and negotiating is a big part of the role of a business agent. For instance, if a company is negotiating the purchase of land or maybe the acquisition of another company, these are often very time consuming and complicated discussions.
A business agent can add value here by representing the individual or business during these negotiations. With their experience, contacts and communication skills, a business agent is usually very successful at closing these negotiations in the best interests of the individual/company they are representing. You may think that the use of a business agent is solely for large established businesses or individuals with a high net worth. However, a business agent can play a pivotal role in any organisation as long as the objective is clearly defined. Since business agents are not employed by the business full time, they are usually contracted for a specific period of time or set number of hours per week/month. This makes it very affordable for all types of businesses to take advantage of the expertise of a business agent.
